The Sickness isn't given a name in the series. It is simply called a sickness that causes Carpathians to reject or cheat on their lifemates. It also causes the man or woman to want others who do not connect with their soul. When this happens, both of them die. The male will always turn vampire in this scenario. It a heartbreaking situation.

When it comes to light that a Carpathian might have the sickness, the prince will often order the male to be destroyed to save his honor before he goes too far. However, this is not always the case, and it causes more harm than good. It is determined that the Dubrinsky line is known to suffer from the sickness, but there could be others not yet discovered or confirmed.

The chemistry between lifemates, the deep bond between them, should keep all Carpathians safe, even before the woman is found or claimed. Before the loss of emotions and colors, it is possible that a male will lay with other women, but once his emotions and colors drain away, it should be impossible for him to be with someone who is not his lifemate.

Carpathians Known to Have the Sickness[]

There are exceptions, and it is a source of concern, if not pitty. Below are brief descriptions of the few known Carpathians who carried the sickness.

Draven Dubrinsky[]

Draven had desired Ivory, and his father, Vladimer, attempted to keep them apart and put Draven before the safety and well being of the Carpathian people at the behest of Sarantha. It was well known that Draven wanted Ivory for her beauty and nothing more. Xavier cultivated that, trading Rhiannon and the death of her lifemate for Ivory. However, Ivory didn't comply with Draven's desires and, with the aid of Xaviero, cut her into pieces and left her for the wolves to eat. It turned out, however, that Draven had a lifemate named Yana, who had been human before her murder, and her death allowed Draven to slip farther into madness because he missed the chance in claiming her. Draven was later brought to justice by Gregori.

Noelle Dubrinsky[]

Noelle had not really been in love with Rand when they asked Mikhail's permission to be bound, but she did think Rand handsome and desired him for that, an attraction that should not have been there. Mikhail let his memories of love for his sister persuade him to allowing them to come together. The need for children was strong as well, but that did not play a part in Mikhail's decision, as he only wished happiness for his people. Noelle was murdered by human butchers.

Rand[]

Rand was with Noelle when he found his true lifemate, Maggie. However, Noelle threatened to kill Maggie if Rand attempted to leave her. Though part of him knew it was wrong and that Mikhail would take charge of Noelle, Rand did not openly claim Maggie as he should have because another part enjoyed having both women. After Noelle's death, Rand attempted to get his son, but he was too grief stricken. He was forced to go to ground to heal and grieve. When he awoke, he knew his true lifemate was gone and he turned vampire instantly. He was brought to justice by Jacques Dubrinsky.

Carpathians Who Might Have had the Sickness[]

Mitro Daratrazanoff[]

It is not directly stated that Mitro had the sickness in the same way that it had been for Draven, Noelle, and Rand. However, due to him rejecting his lifemate, Arabejila, and the way he desired other women's bodies, it is can be assumed that Mitro had the sickness. He was brought to justice by Dax.
